HOWLER MONKEY IN ARENAL
The howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic primate species. It inhabits tropical forests and mangroves, where its powerful vocalizations serve both territorial and social functions. As a diurnal folivore, it plays a vital role in seed dispersal and ecological balance. Despite its adaptability, the species faces increasing threats from habitat fragmentation and contact with power lines. Conserving the howler monkey is essential for safeguarding the biodiversity of Costa Rica’s neotropical ecosystems.

The rufous-tailed jacamar (Galbula ruficauda) is a slender tropical bird with metallic green plumage and a distinctive rufous tail. Found from southern Mexico to Brazil, it inhabits forest edges and open woodlands. It feeds on flying insects, catching them mid-air from exposed perches. Known for its sharp bill and swift flight, it nests in burrows dug into earth banks or termite mounds.
